What is Integrative Trauma Therapy?
I believe that everyone has an innate capacity to heal from trauma, and that therapy should aim to support this natural healing process. Healing from trauma is deeply personal journey, an integrated trauma treatment approach involves combining various trauma centered therapeutic methods to create a personalized and holistic treatment plan. This method recognizes that trauma affects individuals differently and that a single treatment modality may not be sufficient. At Restoring Clarity, trauma is not seen as a disorder but as an injury to the body and mind, requiring compassionate care rather than fixing. This perspective shifts the focus to healing the injury through integrative methods that promotes individualized trauma treatment and engages the body and mind as one interconnected system.
Understanding Trauma Beyond the Past
Trauma is more than a story from the past; it is a present experience felt through profoundly distressing physical sensations and emotions long after the traumatic events are over. My approach focuses on repairing these injuries by prioritizing introspection, establishing a sense of safety, and regulating physiological arousal, all of which are essential steps towards recovery.
A Relational, Experiential And Embodied Approach
Internal Family Systems Therapy
- Utilizing methods like Internal Family Systems (IFS), individuals gain deeper insights into their inner world, understand their behaviors and reactions, and are able to identify and understand their underlying patterns. This approach allows clients to reconnect with their emotions and bodies, and innate wisdom while enhancing their overall well-being and creating new possibilities and perspectives that promote self-trust and regulation. IFS emphasizes the connection between mind and body, encouraging clients to tune into their physical sensations and emotions, enhancing the experiential quality of the therapy and grounding the work in the present moment.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR):
- EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to process and integrate traumatic memories through an eight-phase process: history taking, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure, and reevaluation. EMDR helps reprocess traumatic memories and integrate them into your psyche, promoting healing and relief from distressing symptoms.
Somatic Therapies:
- Somatic Experiencing Therapy addresses the physical manifestations of trauma through body-based techniques. Trauma can cause disconnection from bodily sensations as a way to cope with overwhelming stress. Somatic therapies help individuals reconnect with their bodies, allowing them to sense and understand their physical responses to trauma. Trauma can trap energy in the body, which can lead to physical and psychological symptoms. Somatic therapy techniques help to release this trapped energy, often through small, controlled movements or guided exercises.
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy:
- Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy: PTSD often involves intense emotional numbing and avoidance of trauma-related thoughts and feelings. Ketamine can help break through these barriers by reducing the brain’s default mode network (DMN) activity, which is associated with self-referential thinking and rumination. This reduction in DMN activity allows patients to access and process deeply buried emotions and memories, facilitating a more comprehensive and healing therapeutic experience.
Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques:
To enhance emotional regulation and stress management to calm the body and the mind.
